Action underway for Junior World Rugby Trophy

In Russia, the IRB (International Rugby Board) Junior World Rugby Trophy is a second tier international rugby competition that is underway. This event has taken place for the third year. In the past two years Chile and Romania have been big performers in the tournament, finishing in the top 4 each year.

In this year’s play, Chile is not involved but Romania is back and playing very strong. Romania has managed to win 2 of 3 and is currently in the second place position of Pool A with 9 points, in their first 3 matches.

So far, Italy has been the story of the competition. Securing a 3-0 record atop Pool A, they have managed to win all of their games to this point. In their three games they have managed to score a whopping 120 points. The total points scored by Papua New Guinea in the entire 3 days played, is lower than this average of 40 points a game. Italy has also surrendered just 19 total points. The highest of all teams, they have 14 points in the standings.

In Pool B, Japan is leading the way. Japan has tied 1 match and won 2 out of their three total matches. In Pool B, they have played solid defense, surrendering the lowest point total of all teams. They have also managed to score more points than any team with the exception of Italy. For Italy, Japan looks to be a formidable foe as time moves on if they can hold off Russia, who is on their tail.

Russia has struggled to score points even though they have won 2 of 3 matches. They have actually surrendered more points than they have scored themselves, despite their positive record. This is a disturbing fact for a team that is hoping to compete in the competition.
